Braes: Samuel Nicolson

SAMUEL NICOLSON, Crofter, Balmeanach appears in the 1881 census, aged 48, at 8 Balmeanach, [Braes], Skye, a tenant with 2 acres of arable land. He is married to Catharine, aged 39. He has a family of 6 children, Isabella (14), Nicol (12), Flora (9), Catharine (7), Alexander (4) and Margaret (1). 

In 1891, he is a crofter at 5 Balmeanach, with only his younger children Alexander (14), Peggy [Margaret] (11) and Sarah (9) at home.

In 1871, Samuel is aged 35, at "no 16", in the house of his mother Sarah (63),  with his wife Catherine (30) and children Margaret (9) and Nichol (2). Also present are his brothers Donald (40, an unemployed fisher) and Murdoch (38, an unemployed fisher) .

In 1861, Samuel (26) is at 19 Belmeanach, in the house of his uncle Alexander Matheson (70) , where his mother Sarah (55) and aunt Catharine (75, weaveress). Also present are his siblings Mary (42), Donald (30), Murdo (28) and Mary (24).

In 1841, Samuel (7) is at Balemanaeld [sic], with relatives Alexander Matheson (40), Catharine Matheson (45), Sarah Matheson (35), Mary Nicolson (20), Donald (11), Murdock (9) and Flora (5). The 1841 census does not display family relationships.
